Title: Summer Rental
Author: Mary Kay Andrews
Publisher St. Martins Press
Published Date: 07 June 2011
Book Type: Fiction
SUMMER RENTAL by Mary Kay Andrews follows a very typical chick lit format without all the trite non-sense of a typical chick lit book. Friends, love, vacation, jobs, and a crime or two set the stage for this good summer read.
Ellis, Dorie, and Julia agree to take a month long vacation in the Outer Banks, NC (Nags Head) for the month of August. Ellis has recently been downsized from a job at a bank in Philadelphia, Julia is at a cross roads with her long term boyfriend, but her relationship issues could put a damper on her love life. Dorie faces money trouble, relationship issues (both old and new), and the secret she is keeping from her friends. After a new unexpected house guest and all girl drama they can handle, Im sure they were all wondering by the last day if a group trip was the best idea.
This has been my summer of chick lit. Im always surprised to find a book that delves a little more into the human element of chick lit rather than the commonplace typical storylines that usually occur. The little bit of crime actually spices up the story. Dorie's scandelous behavior after her secret is revealed in the form of a "friend" helps scandel up the theme.
The book is a little too long for me to consider it a beach read. Id be red as a lobster and probably not finished all the pages - but I would take it with me... Although set the timer if your sunbathing! Its easy to get lost in the story.
