2 More for July

42. Zelah Green by Vanessa Curtis (audio version) This was a quick book! It was a look inside a teenage girl struggling with OCD, the death of her mother, a step-monster, and a father she thought just disappeared. It was witty and British. Super cute! Nothing too racey either so I would say okay for tween/teens. (there is some first crushes but nothing mushy, and the backstory on the death of Zelah's mother from Cancer is not very descriptive or traumatic). This is the first book in the series.

43. Escape From Camp Fourteen by Blaine Harden A few years ago, I became rather obsessed with North Korea. I think it's because my grandfather fought in the war there, and there is so much unknown about it that what we do know does not quench my thirst for more knowledge. Plus Im fascinated with their political hierarchy and baffled by why the world allows such massive human rights violations continue. Escape From Camp Fourteen is the story of the only known person to escape the N. Korean gulag and live to tell about it. Its a story of survival of a child unlucky enough to be born to parents locked away in the prison for the sins of their parents before them. He speaks of torture, how he was involved in the deaths of members of his family, how the camp works, how he escaped and his life through out. It was really intense at times, but from what professionals can tell, its consistent with the stories of other refugees from other less treacherous camps throughout North Korea. If your interested in all things North Korea, there are a few really good documentaries on Netflix including ones on the American soldiers who defected to N Korea. There is also a documentary by Lisa Ling, and the book Lisa and her sister Laura Ling wrote about Laura's time held captive in North Korea after crossing the border.
