Anthony Swofford - Jarhead and Exit A

JARHEAD

I read this book so long ago, but I still remember it well.  Even as a teenager I had a fascination with politics, wars and the military.  This book was my first encounter with the emotional toll taken on soldiers during the war.  In some ways, its the book that kept me reading more books in the same genre.  When I read the book I was just entering my twenty's.  Reading about people my age going through the that kind of roller coaster ride pulled at my heart and started my love affair with the dynamics of soldiers in war.  The book was much better than the movie, but its that usually the way it always turns out?? Its a great read and if you haven't picked it up then I think you need to crawl out from the rock you've been under and pick it up ASAP!!!

EXIT A

After reading Jarhead, when I came across Exit A I was expecting more of the same style.  Boy was I surprised after reading this fiction debut.  Its was a wonderful story about a boy who lived on an American base outside of Tokyo and falls in love with the base colonel's daughter who is half Japanese.  If follows his falling in love with her and her turn into the petty criminal underworld.  What seems like a lifetime later Severin sets off to search for Virginia.  This book is much different than Jarhead but I loved it and highly recommend picking it up!
