4. THE FIRST AFFAIR by Emma McLaughlin & Nicola Kraus
This book is a little Lewinsky-esque. The authors of this book also wrote THE NANNY DIARIES and CITIZEN GIRL among others. Jamie Macallister heads to Washington. She is the always forgotten child of a drunk father and a mother obsessed with her other drug recovering child. Her sister is a bitch. Jamie ends up dragging her whole family into an affair with the President of the United States - clothing with specimen and all.
Jamie Macallister - although she does come across as the girl next door who just wanted to believe this man loved her. But she honestly comes off as a whiny unlikable brat who cant pull her head of our her ass. I didn't care for her as the lead at all. I think it could have been written with her having more depth.
5. UNORTHODOX: THE SCANDALOUS REJECTION OF MY HASIDIC ROOTS by Deborah Feldman
I really wanted to like this book. It was insightful, and thoughtful, but there was no scandal really. I get that it is scandalous to leave the Hasidic life, but I didn't see any of the fight it took to leave. There has never been a Hasidic wife who left her husband and the community and been able to keep her child so it would have been great for her to dive into that portion of the story. Otherwise it was just the story of her childhood, her teenage years, her loveless marriage - and her naivete about her husband giving her an STD followed by her decision to leave, but after that it ends.
6. NO HIGHER HONOR by Condoleezza Rice
This was a long book. It was nice to get an inside look at the adversarial relationship between she and Donald Rumsfeld. I think some of the anecdotes fell under the umbrella of "discretion is the better part of valor". But overall it was a thorough view of the big events of her time with the Bush Administration.
7. LABOR DAY by Joyce Maynard
This book was kind of eh for me. I did not care for the writing style. It came from the child's perspective. I did like the end. The previews for the movie look good. I hope its better than the book. It definitely has the potential to be better than the book - especially with Kate Winslet!
